Exploring the Service Experiences of Women with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their Families

What’s this project about?

Past research has shown that many individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families do not receive the services and supports that they need. However, most of the research to date focuses on the experiences of young boys with ASD; we know very little about women with ASD and their families. We want to better understand how services can best meet the needs of women with ASD and their families.

How will we go about doing this research?

Women with ASD (18 years old and older) and/or their family caregivers will come to York University to participate in small discussion groups. We will ask questions about what services participants use, what services they need and what could be done to improve their service experiences. Participation is expected to take approximately 1.5 hours. All participants will receive a $50 gift card.

Who can be involved?

We are looking for women (18 years and older) with a formal diagnosis of ASD who are able to participate independently in group discussions. We are also looking for family caregivers of women with ASD to participate in separate group discussions.

What will we do with our research findings?

We will write an article summarizing our findings to submit to an academic journal, present the results at national and international conferences, and create a brief summary of our findings to post on this website. The results from this study will provide service providers and policy makers with important information about how to best support women with ASD and their families. This study should also encourage further research in this understudied area.

What is the next step?

We have completed recruitment for this study, and are in the process of analyzing the results. We will be sending an update about what we are finding to all the participants, and plan on presenting results at upcoming scientific conferences. Stay tuned!
